Elizabeth Hoover

Formerly the Assistant Director of the Furious Flower Poetry Center, Elizabeth Hoover was the founding editor of The Fight & the Fiddle. Before coming to Furious Flower, she was the assistant editor of Sampsonia Way magazine, where she covered international literature. Her criticism and author interviews have appeared in the Paris Review, Los Angeles Times, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, among others.  She is also the author of three biographies for young adults and is currently researching a biography of the poet Robert Hayden. She is also a prize-winning poet.

  • July 2014

    Elizabeth Hoover (Assistant Director, Furious Flower Poetry Center) received $8,000 from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities for “Fusion: Furious Flower: Seeding the Future of African American Poetry” to advance the field of African American poetry, to raise visibility of black poetry and to address the need for diversity for college students. Hoover received $3,200 from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to support a concert that is the opening event for the poetry conference.

    Elizabeth Hoover (Assistant Director, Furious Flower Poetry Center) and Dr. Joanne V. Gabbin (Director, Furious Flower Poetry Center; Director Emeritus, Honors Program; Professor, English) received $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts for the Furious Flower Conference “Seeding the Future of African American Poetry” to organize the conference that presents the best established and emerging black poets to a large and diverse audience.
