I.B. Message from the President

A new century of possibilities and potential is before us as we welcome a fresh generation of students. Students who will be confronted with some of the most complex problems in the history of our nation including but certainly not limited to the economy, healthcare, energy and the environment. However, when I look around campus at the brilliant minds and capable hands who are entrusted with the education of our students, I feel a sense of confidence and hope. For you, the faculty of James Madison University hold the keys, the formulas and the blueprints that our students will one day transform into solutions, plans, and antidotes for these burdensome predicaments.

As a member of the campus community, I also hope that you will continue to uphold our shared legacy of collaboration and innovation. These themes will allow us to leverage our knowledge in this dynamic world so that we can lead the changes, not merely respond to them.

"We are committed to preparing students to be educated and enlightened citizens who lead productive and meaningful lives."

As you read the words of our mission above, be reminded that we join together as faculty, staff, and administrators of James Madison University in this common pursuit. This Faculty Handbook serves as a useful tool and provides us with a roadmap that defines the terms of our responsibilities to one another and a guidebook for the behaviors that will allow each of us to contribute in unison to our mission's achievement.

I particularly want to congratulate the faculty members and administrators who have served on the Faculty Handbook Committee in this past year. Their improvements to this document will provide guidance and assistance to us all in our work.

The students will provide their thanks to you by achieving the success described in the mission statement of the university, and it will be largely attributable to your influence. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the faculty of JMU. I am honored to work along side you all.

Dr. Linwood H. Rose
President
