CIS/SMAD Presentations

Tue, 4 Dec 2018 12:00 AM - Sun, 9 Dec 2018 3:00 PM

Where: Grafton-Stovall Theatre

When: Saturday, December 8 | 12:30pm-3:00pm

Every semester, students from SMAD collaborate with Computer Information Systems students to create a solution to a real-life business problem. The CIS students enroll in the CIS 484 capstone, which is designed to offer an environment for students to work with an actual client to solve a business need. CIS students are expected to utilize the knowledge and skills they have learned and obtained through the prerequisite CIS core courses, including database, programming, systems analysis and design and others, to develop a solution for the client. The students are assigned to small teams within the class who compete to develop the best solution. These teams are matched with a pair of SMAD students who help immensely with the front-end design of the program. This solution for this semester includes the development of an application with a database and web-based interface.

KPMG, a long-standing employer of CIS graduates, worked very closely with the capstone classes this semester. KPMG provided mentors for the student teams to help them to understand and satisfy the project requirements.

The competition among the teams is intense. A group of judges is convened where the two top teams face-off and provide a compelling presentation of their solution. The audience includes KPMG mentors, CIS and SMAD faculty, current JMU students, slumni, family, and friends. Food is provided. We hope you enjoy the presentations.
