From Bosnia to Ireland: Study Abroad, Stories and Impact

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This program is part of the Office of International Program's annual International Week.

When: September 20 (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Grafton Stovall

What to expect: Study abroad programs immerse students in new and unfamiliar environments with the goal of broadening their perspectives and promoting cross-cultural awareness.  Two separate OIP summer programs, one in Bosnia and the other in Ireland, expanded this objective by having students collaborate with local non-profit organizations.  Students documented the stories of individuals within the community served by the non-profits.  This collaboration created a mutually beneficial relationship that both supported the organizations’ missions while furthering the students’ own engaged learning opportunities. The students were truly embedded in the host country’s culture where they saw more than the tourist landmarks, but learned first-hand of the strengths of the community and the obstacles faced by the non-profits.  The organizations benefited from the fresh perspectives of the students and the stories that they documented.  In both cases, the stories continue to have a lasting impact.
