September 26: Belay & Climb:

You have climbed a few times before, so are you ready for the next step? Through this program you will learn how to use the equipment and safety systems for belaying other climbers at the wall. After completing this program you will be ready to take the written and practical belay certification assessment.

September 26: Salsa Lesson Series:

If you want to feel comfortable dancing Salsa in the clubs, this is for you! Learn to lead and to follow. You’ll learn the basic steps and turns to mix and match on the dance floor. This is a social dance so you don’t need to sign-up with a partner. Class will be interactive so you truly learn to dance in a social setting. All fitness levels welcome.

This is a four-week series: Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17.

Location: UREC Multi-Purpose Studio

Register by September 24 at the UREC Program Registration Desk with FLEX. The cost is $20/individual or $30/pair.

September 26: Fitness 2 Orientation:

Sign up for an orientation to become more familiar with Fitness 2 (second floor of UREC - the Cardio and Cybex equipment area).  Come prepared to exercise.  Jeans and open toed shoes are not permitted in the fitness areas!  Spaces are limited.

Enjoy some fresh air, stars, and an outdoor movie with your friends on Thursday night!

September 27: Yogis Take a Hike:

We have invited one of the UREC Yogis for this modified hiking program. Run as a Friday afternoon program, Yogi’s Hike allows you to regain balance and release stress that will help kick off a relaxing weekend. We will hike to a scenic spot in the national forest where you will be guided through a series of sun salutation and downward dogs after which we will hike out and along a stream through an amazing stand of Rhododendron and return to UREC. No required knowledge is required, but the ability to hike over rough terrain is required.

Location: Check-out a Yoga Mat from the Equipment Center and meet in the UREC Atrium!

Register at UREC with FLEX ($15) by 11pm the Thursday before the trip.

September 27: Kids' Night Out:

Kids' Night Out is an opportunity for children ages 5-12 come to UREC to play, climb, swim and interact with other children, eat pizza and have a GREAT time! 

This KNO theme is Kickoff to Fall! Come join us for a fun fall themed evening. Activities will include pumpkin decorating, “leafy” crafts and activities that will ring in the new season! Rock climbing, swimming and dinner will all be provided as well.

Each KNO is supervised by our UREC Graduate Assistants. The cost is $20 and includes pizza and drinks for dinner.

Drop-off begins at the end of Driver Drive at 4:45pm and lasts until 5:15pm. Pick-up will begin at 9pm and we ask that each child is picked up before 9:10pm.

Maximize your cycle workout with POWER. Build strength and endurance utilizing the computerized system on the cycles to give you feedback.

September 28: Hiking and Hotcakes Trip:

A hike in the crisp air and pancakes, what else could you ask for? This trip will head to Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness Area for a beautiful hike with a stop along the way at the Buckhorn Inn for breakfast. This trip has become an adventure program favorite!

Participants will be provided with any equipment needed for the activity but are asked to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and be prepared for changing weather. Since we are out for the entire day participants should plan to bring a bag lunch and 1-2 liters of water.

The trip leader will contact registered participants via email prior to the trip with where to meet, an exact departure time, and your approximate return time.

Register at UREC by the Thursday (11pm) before the trip with $25 FLEX (includes breakfast).

September 28: Healthy in Harrisonburg:

Join the UREC nutrition staff in a walk to the Harrisonburg farmers market to learn how to benefit from eating locally and in-season. Group will meet in front of Duke Hall.

Location: Meet in front of Duke Hall and walk as group to the Farmers' Market.

September 29: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer:

This American Red Cross course provides training for people who are expected to respond to emergencies as part of their job duties. As a professional rescuer, you will learn to recognize and provide care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies. You will learn how to correctly use an Automated External Defibrillator to aid in cardiac emergencies. This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

Register at UREC with $65 FLEX by the day of the program.

Download and print this Training Material before the course and bring it with you. Registered participants must arrive early for any of the Red Cross Courses that you register for (10 to 15 minutes is recommended). If you arrive later than the scheduled start time, you will not be permitted entry into the class and will not be eligible to receive a refund.

September 29: First Aid:

Interested in learning about more informal recreation opportunities at UREC? The Informal Recreation staff at UREC brings you: Pick Up & Play!

Participants may experience a variety of sports and activities such as Walleyball, Racquetball, Climbing Wall, Table Tennis, Volleyball, and Floor Hockey in the Fall semester.

Open to all skill levels. Come meet others with your same interest in recreation!

September 30: Learn to Climb:

Learn how to climb the UREC Climbing Wall! This is the program for participants who have not climbed before. No required knowledge, skill or physical ability. Our adventure assistants will teach you about the safety systems, equipment, and techniques used at our indoor climbing wall. By the end of this program you will have the knowledge and experience that will help you feel more comfortable while climbing and prepare for the Belay & Climb program.
