April 1 - King and Queen of the U: Outdoor Basketball Tournament (Special Event) Registration

Register your team for Intramural King and Queen of the U: Outdoor Basketball Tournament April 1-11, 2013!

The Captain's Meeting will take place April 15 at 5pm in the UREC Instructional Room (forfeit bond payment due on FLEX at this time). The tournament will take place April 20, 2013.

All UREC Intramural Sports are offered in different skill and interest levels. Our staff is committed to fostering teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in a clean, safe, and social setting. Individuals and organizations participating in Intramural Sports should exhibit an attitude and understanding that good sportsmanship and fair play are an integral part of the activity.



April 1 - Belay and Climb 101

You have climbed a few times before - are you ready for the next step? Through this program you will learn how to use the equipment and safety systems for belaying other climbers at the wall. After completing this program you will be ready to take the written and practical belay certification assessment. For those who are new to adventure programs. No required knowledge, skill or physical ability.

Would you like to vary your running routine? This is your chance. We will join the Rocktown Ridge Runners for their weekly Wednesday evening run. This group run is open to runners of all abilities, no previous trail running experience is necessary. The Ridge Runners will guide you to one of our local trails and make sure you don’t get lost! Experience the joy of running a ribbon of trail through the forest.

April 5 - Happy Hour: Cycle Through the Decades

Come Join Heather and Katie K, and Cycle Through the Decades. Music from the Jackson 5 to Nicki Minaj, cycle to some of your favorites from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and today’s current jams.

Location: UREC Cycle Studio

UREC's Group Fitness Happy Hours are different every week! Each class offers a unique, fun workout. Hip-hop, aerobics, kickboxing, mind/body theme classes and more! Instructor’s choice! Choreography varies. All fitness levels welcome.

April 6 - Club Tae Kwon Do V.E.R.T.

Come watch Club Tae Kwon Do complete beginning V.E.R.T on Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM in Godwin 344, and from 1 PM to 7 PM in the Godwin Multipurpose Studio and Godwin Combatives Room. On Sunday there will be Advanced V.E.R.T. in the Godwin Multipurpose Studio and Godwin Combatives Room from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

April 6 - Backpacking Trip

For those of you who want to step further into the wild we offer 2-3 day backpacking trips. This trip is offered in fall, winter and spring seasons. Each season offers unique challenges and opportunities. We will provide you with your backpack, tent, sleeping bag, and cooking equipment. Our trip leaders enjoy the art of backcountry cooking and will show you how to make delicious meals on a backpacking stove. All you need to provide is sturdy shoes, and clothing appropriate to the season. These trips require a pre-trip meeting to make sure you are prepared with necessary clothing and gear. These trips are designed for the first time or experienced backpacker. No required knowledge or skill is required. Ability to carry a pack over rough terrain is required.

There is a required pre-trip meeting 4/4/13 8pm at UREC. Register at UREC by the meeting before the trip with $65 FLEX.

April 6 - White Water River Kayaking

We will introduce you to all the gear, find the correct boat for you, and make sure you gain experience handling and exiting the boat before we go to the river.  The stretch of river we will be paddling offers numerous class I and II rapids and includes one class III rapid toward the end of the trip.  We will provide all the equipment, instruction, and transportation.  This class is designed for the adventurous participant that is new to the sport of whitewater kayaking.  No prior knowledge, skill or physical ability required. 

There is a required pool session 4/4/13 8pm-10pm at UREC. Register at UREC by the pool session before the trip with $40 FLEX.

April 7 - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

This American Red Cross course provides training for people who are expected to respond to emergencies as part of their job duties. As a professional rescuer, you will learn to recognize and provide care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies. You will learn how to correctly use an Automated External Defibrillator to aid in cardiac emergencies.This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

Register at UREC with $65 FLEX by the day of the program.

April 7 - First Aid

This American Red Cross course provides training in recognizing an emergency situation. The participant will be able to: control severe bleeding, care for shock, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, sudden illness, and heat/cold related emergencies. This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

Register at UREC with $25 FLEX by the day of the program.

April 8 - Cardio Tennis

Tennis is the sport of a lifetime, open to all ages and skill levels.  Come join us for drill based play, game based play and learn basic techniques from a Pro Tennis Registry Instructor.  This workout is sure to get your heart pumping! This will take place at the Tennis Courts outside of UREC.

April 8 - Lifeguarding Pre - Requisite (Step 1)

To be eligible for the Lifeguard class, participants must first take the Pre-Requisite Test. If participants are able to pass the Pre-Requisite they will then be able to register for the lifeguarding class on a first come first serve basis.You must be on time to participate in the Pre-Requisite test.

The Pre-Requisite test includes a continuous 300 yard swim; participants must be proficient in front crawl (using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick) and breaststroke (using a pull, breath, kick and glide sequence). The participants also will need to be able to tread water for 2 minutes without support and without stopping, using only their legs. Lastly, they will retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the pool and swim 20 yards with the brick, without the use of goggles. The 300 yard swim is not timed, but it must be continuous; the brick retrieval and swim must be done within 1 minute 40 seconds.

Register at UREC with $20 FLEX by the day of the program. Participants may retake this course without an additional fee as many times as needed until they pass in a semester.

April 10 - Sunset Yoga

Let’s zen out at University Park during the peak sunset time of the day. Expect a yoga fitness class that starts to settle down as the sun sets. Bring some layers for final relaxation!

April 12 - Mountain Biking Weekend

The inaugural JMU spring mountain biking weekend. Join up for an overnight trip to Douthat State Park in the Allegheny Highlands of Virginia for some flowing single track. Find out why locals refer to Douthat as Mountain Bike Disneyland. Participants of all ability levels are welcome; Douthat trails offer something for everyone. Bring your own bike or helmet or rent a bike through UREC.

April 12 - Lifeguard Training

This American Red Cross Lifeguarding course will train the participants in all the skills and techniques necessary to become a professional lifeguard. This training course is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. The class covers equipment based rescues, spinal injury management and post – rescue care. Participants will also learn how to interact with the public.

This is a three-day training:

  • April 12, 2013: 5-9pm
  • April 13, 2013: 9am-5pm
  • April 14, 2013: 9am-5pm 

Participants must successfully pass the Lifeguarding Pre-Requisite Session to register for this course. Participants must be on time and ready to partake in every session; if participant is late this will result in failure of the course. Upon successful completion of this course the participant will receive Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications valid for two years. Certification cards will be mailed to participants within one month of course completion.

Register at UREC with $100 FLEX by the day of the program. This fee is non-refundable if participant does not demonstrate skill competency or fails written test.

April 13 - Club Women's Ultimate Tournament - The Bonanza

Come cheer on JMU Women's Ultimate as they compete against teams from all over the east coast in their annual tournament, the Bonanza! Games will run from 7 AM to 6 PM at UREC Upper and Lower Turf on Saturday and Sunday.

April 13 - Intro to Rock Climbing

Join us for a fantastic day of climbing as we travel to one of our local climbing crags. These trips are open to all interested in the sport of rock climbing regardless of experience or ability. No required knowledge, skill or physical ability. Our trip leaders will ensure that everyone learns and follows all the safety procedures and will set up climbs that provide the right amount of challenge for all levels and abilities.

Trips usually meet at UREC at 9am and return around 5 pm. Participants will be provided with any equipment needed for the activity but are asked to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and be prepared for changing weather. Since we are out for the entire day participants should plan to bring a bag lunch and 1-2 liters of water.

April 15 - Outdoor Yoga

Take yoga in the serene setting of the Arboretum. Connect to yourself and to your surroundings. In case of inclement weather, class will be canceled. Yoga mats are available in the Equipment Center for you to check out prior to class time. Intended for those who are familiar with this type of group fitness class and have some experience with exercise programs.

April 15 - H2WHOAAH!!

Interested in trying a workout in the water? What about one that doesn’t involve lap swimming? If either of these raised a brow for you, come to this program for a great workout. H2WHHOAAH!! is a circuit workout in the water that can be done in any pool. It’s fun, it’s an hour, and you’ll learn about the benefits of aquatic exercise as well as actually perform the circuit. All swim levels welcome and don’t forget to bring a towel and suit!

Bring your suit and a towel for our dive-in movie nights! Float in a tube and enjoy a movie with your friends!

April 19 - Kids' Night Out

Kids' Night Out is an opportunity for children ages 6-12 to spend the evening at UREC climbing the wall, swimming and playing different games and activities. Each KNO is supervised by a different Sport Club or Student Organization. The cost is $20 and includes pizza and drinks for dinner.

April 19 - Car Camping

Experience a night of good old car camping at a local campground. You will learn how to pitch a tent, build a fire and cook your dinner on a two-burner propane stove. A drive to the summit of Reddish Knob or a short hike is a possibility before settling in around the campfire for some SMORE’s.

April 20 - Intermediate White Water Kayaking

This trip is designed for the participant that has felt successful in the River Kayak program or who has previous whitewater kayaking experience. We will review boat handling and exiting basics in the pool before heading out to paddle a section of river that will include class I, II and III rapids.  This program requires good physical ability.

There is a required pool session 4/18/13 8pm-10pm at UREC. Register at UREC by the pool session before the trip with $40 FLEX.

April 20 - Duke Dog Challenge

Come put your skills to the test in this outdoor fitness challenge! Run, jump and lift your way to earning the title of the Strongest Duke! This event will include eight separate challenges that test muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular, flexibility and balance components. The top male and female competitors in each academic class will be selected and can earn prizes! The competition will be fierce so lace up your athletic shoes and start training!

April 26 - Full Moon and Marshmallows

Experience the beauty of a moonlight forest path on this night hike on one of the national forest trails. You will enjoy the starry sky and interesting light and shadows cast by the full moon. We will round out the experience with a campfire and SMORE’s!

April 27 - Canoeing on the Shenandoah River

Enjoy being out on the water? Join us on a canoe adventure where you will forget all about the pace of campus life and spend time watching blue herons, bald eagles, and osprey in their natural habitat. Our single day trip usually is spent on the nearby South Fork of the Shenandoah between the towns of Shenandoah and Luray. We make it a point to stop along the way for you to enjoy your lunch. For those who are new to adventure programs. No required knowledge or skill related to canoeing required.
