March 1 - Lifeguard Training
This American Red Cross Lifeguarding course will train the participants in all the skills and techniques necessary to become a professional lifeguard. This training course is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. The class covers equipment based rescues, spinal injury management and post – rescue care. Participants will also learn how to interact with the public.
This is a three-day training:
- March 1, 2013: 5-9pm
- March 2, 2013: 9am-5pm
- March 3, 2013: 9am-5pm
Participants must successfully pass the Lifeguarding Pre-Requisite Session to register for this course. Participants must be on time and ready to partake in every session; if participant is late this will result in failure of the course. Upon successful completion of this course the participant will receive Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications valid for two years. Certification cards will be mailed to participants within one month of course completion.
Register at UREC with $100 FLEX by the day of the program. This fee is non-refundable if participant does not demonstrate skill competency or fails written test.

March 2 - Spring Break Whitewater Kayaking Trip
Join us for a week road-tripping deep into the mountains of North Carolina with kayaks in tow to paddle some of the state's beautiful whitewater rivers. This trip is designed with the novice to intermediate boater in mind. Sections of rapids will generally consist of class I – III rapids as rated on the International Scale of River Difficulty and will include river sections on The Little Tennessee, Tuskegee, and Nantahala Rivers among others. We will base camp as a group at Tumbling Waters campground in Almond, NC.
As part of the trip package, kayak roll and pools session will be made available to student participants throughout the month of February at UREC to knock the rust of your existing boat skills and to develop new ones.

March 3 - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
This American Red Cross course provides training for people who are expected to respond to emergencies as part of their job duties. As a professional rescuer, you will learn to recognize and provide care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies. You will learn how to correctly use an Automated External Defibrillator to aid in cardiac emergencies.This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

This American Red Cross course provides training in recognizing an emergency situation. The participant will be able to: control severe bleeding, care for shock, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, sudden illness, and heat/cold related emergencies. This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

March 11 - Weight Training 101
Interested in weight training but not quite sure where to start? Are you looking to fine tune your exercise form or learn some new exercises, then check out Weight Training 101 for tips on proper exercise form, safety precautions and general weight lifting principles. Please come prepared to exercise; you won’t want to miss this! This program will begin in the UREC Instructional Room.

The Pre-Requisite test includes a continuous 300 yard swim; participants must be proficient in front crawl (using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick) and breaststroke (using a pull, breath, kick and glide sequence). The participants also will need to be able to tread water for 2 minutes without support and without stopping, using only their legs. Lastly, they will retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the pool and swim 20 yards with the brick, without the use of goggles. The 300 yard swim is not timed, but it must be continuous; the brick retrieval and swim must be done within 1 minute 40 seconds.
Register at UREC with $20 FLEX by the day of the program. Participants may retake this course without an additional fee as many times as needed until they pass in a semester.

March 11 - Self-Defense Level 2
Can’t get enough of self-defense? The instructor, John Campbell has extended the Level 1 class by adding in defense techniques from the ground. John has taught martial arts for 11 years and also teaches defensive techniques for law enforcement. This class is not recommended if you have personal space issues and also requires completion of the Level 1 class.
This is a 5-class series from 6-7pm on March 11, 18, 25, April 1, and 8.

March 12 - FAST (Faculty/Staff) Fitness
This class is for JMU Faculty and Staff only. Yoga Instructors from the community will combine traditional yoga postures and modern fitness for an incredible mind/body workout that will increase strength, endurance, and flexibility. Expect basic to intermediate poses. All fitness levels welcome.
This is a 12-class series from 5:30-6:30pm on March 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28, April 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, and 18.

March 12 - Adult Swim Lessons (Intermediate)
The Intermediate class is designed for participants who are comfortable swimming in shallow water and have experience swimming in deep water. The course is designed to provide participants the ability to swim distances greater than 25 yards comfortably using more than one defined swimming stroke. Improving stroke technique to allow for continuous lap swimming is the primary goal. The general goals include increased proficiency in the basic strokes, development of more advanced strokes and turns, greater understanding of safety, and the ability to use water as a medium for recreation and fitness.
This is a 3-class session from 6-6:30pm on March 12, 19, and 26.
Register for this program with $20 FLEX only at the UREC Welcome Center by the Friday prior to the start of the session. The Olympics may be every four years, but you can perform Olympic lifts any day of the year! Check out this program to learn more about Olympic lifts, the effective techniques and proper form that can earn your workout a gold medal! Come prepared to exercise! March 13 - Trail Running
Would you like to vary your running routine? This is your chance. We will join the Rocktown Ridge Runners for their weekly Wednesday evening run. This group run is open to runners of all abilities, no previous trail running experience is necessary. The Ridge Runners will guide you to one of our local trails and make sure you don’t get lost! Experience the joy of running a ribbon of trail through the forest.

March 14 - Learn to Climb 101
This is the program for participants who have not climbed before. No required knowledge, skill or physical ability. Our adventure assistants will teach you about the safety systems, equipment, and techniques used at our indoor climbing wall. By the end of this program you will have the knowledge and experience that will help you feel more comfortable while climbing and prepare for the Belay and Climb program.

March 14 - Bachata Lessons
Do you love taking our cardio dance classes? Are you interested in more instructional technique in Latin rhythms? Enter Bachata. This rhythm is different than your regular salsa and meringue. Come to these lessons to turn, dip, and move to this sensual rhythm. All levels welcome. Please wear non-marking shoes and socks.
This is a 4-class series from 6:45-7:45pm on March 14, 21, 28 and April 4.

March 18 - Battleship Registration

The Captain's Meeting will take place April 1 at 5pm in the UREC Instructional Room (forfeit bond payment due on FLEX at this time). The tournament will take place April 6, 2013.
All UREC Intramural Sports are offered in different skill and interest levels. Our staff is committed to fostering teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in a clean, safe, and social setting. Individuals and organizations participating in Intramural Sports should exhibit an attitude and understanding that good sportsmanship and fair play are an integral part of the activity.
March 19 - U-WRECK Boot Camp
This outdoor training series will leave you thirsting for more! Body weight exercises and interval training combine for the ultimate workout, something you won’t want to miss! The U-WRECK Boot Camp is an ideal training series for the Duke Dog Challenge; if you’re looking to compete, look first to train with us! This program will take place every Thursday from March 19-April 18 (register once).

March 19 - 5 Weeks to 5k
Is one of your goals to run a 5k? What better way to train than in a group setting! The instructor will teach you tips for long distance running form, and then take you on a run each class. By the end of the 5 weeks, you get to show off your hard work at a 5k race (TBD). Minimal fee to cover the race registration.
Sessions: March 19, 26, April 2, 9 (one more session TBD).

March 19 - Lead Climbing
Ready for the sharp end of the rope? So, you have been climbing for a while now and you are ready to start leading. Our instructors will teach the proper techniques and how to avoid mistakes like back clipping and Z-clipping. You will have the opportunity to practice your skills by mock leading on our wall. All participants must have belay approval at the UREC Wall.

The equinox occurs twice a year when night and day are approximately equal in length. Come to this Yoga class to learn more about the equinox as well as embrace the sun and moon salutations. All fitness levels welcome.

March 22 - Alley Cat Bike Scavenger Hunt
The inaugural JMU alley cat bicycle scavenger hunt happens this spring. Alley cat rides grew out of bike messenger culture in urban center across the country. With the riding style of bike messengers in mind the JMU Alley cat invites you and/or a team of friends to compete in a messenger style scavenger hunt around town that will test not only your bike handling abilities but also your “townie” status. Bragging rights are on the line!

March 22 - Kids' Night Out
Kids' Night Out is an opportunity for children ages 6-12 to spend the evening at UREC climbing the wall, swimming and playing different games and activities. Each KNO is supervised by a different Sport Club or Student Organization. The cost is $20 and includes pizza and drinks for dinner.

March 23 - Hiking and Hotcakes
A hike in the crisp air and pancakes, what else could you ask for? This trip will head to Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness Area for a beautiful hike with a stop along the way at the Buckhorn Inn for breakfast. This trip has become an adventure program favorite!
Trips usually meet at UREC at 9am and return around 5 pm. Participants will be provided with any equipment needed for the activity but are asked to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and be prepared for changing weather. Since we are out for the entire day participants should plan to bring a bag lunch and 1-2 liters of water.

March 23 - Intro to Rock Climbing
Join us for a fantastic day of climbing as we travel to one of our local climbing crags. These trips are open to all interested in the sport of rock climbing regardless of experience or ability. No required knowledge, skill or physical ability. Our trip leaders will ensure that everyone learns and follows all the safety procedures and will set up climbs that provide the right amount of challenge for all levels and abilities.

March 27 - Full Moon Canoe Trip
Enjoy being out on the water? Join us on a canoe adventure where you will forget all about the pace of campus life and spend the evening star gazing. We’ll take a quick trip to the nearby South Fork of the Shenandoah River. For those who are new to adventure programs. No required knowledge or skill related to canoeing required.

March 28 - Climbing Technique
Are you ready to take your climbing to the next level? The climbing technique program will help you learn how to make better use of your footwork, the importance of core strength, and show to how/when to use s specific moves such as layback, stemming, and matches in your climbing. No required knowledge or skill related to adventure activities but requires good physical ability.

March 29 - Bouldering Trip
Come out and have a great afternoon bouldering at one of our local areas. Bouldering has all the fun aspects of climbing without the equipment fuss! This trip is open to all interested in the sport of rock climbing. No previous knowledge or skill is required. Participants will be provided with any equipment needed for the activity but are asked to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and be prepared for changing weather. Since we are out for a few hours participants should plan to bring 1-2 liters of water.

March 29 - Yogis Take a Hike
We have invited one of the UREC Yogis for this modified hiking program. Run as a Friday afternoon program, Yogi’s Hike allows you to regain balance and release stress that will help kick off a relaxing weekend. We will hike to a scenic spot in the national forest where you will be guided through a series of sun salutation and downward dogs after which we will hike out and along a stream through an amazing stand of Rhododendron and return to UREC. For those who are new to adventure programs. No required knowledge or skill is required. Ability to hike over rough terrain is required.
Register at UREC with FLEX ($15) by the day before the program.

March 30 - Intro to Lead Climbing
For those who are interested in learning how to lead and set up climbs safely - this trip is for you. You should have a good understanding of rock movement and be belay certified. Requires previous experience and skill in adventure activities and is very physically demanding.
We will be focusing on skills for safe sport climbing. Participants will be provided with any equipment needed for the activity but are asked to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and be prepared for changing weather. Since we are out for the entire day participant should plan to bring a bag lunch and 1-2 liters of water.
