Philosophy colloquium with Dr. Debra Bergoffen

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

On Friday, November 11th, Dr. Debra Bergoffen will give a philosophy colloquium talk from 3:30-5:00 in Cleveland Hall 114

TITLE: "The Flight From Vulnerability"

ABSTRACT:

Western Culture, in its idealization of autonomy, independence and invulnerability, embodies a flight from vulnerability. This talk critiques current denigrations of vulnerability -- the ways that it is equated with weakness and victimhood. Finding that it is fueled by an infantile trauma that haunts adult sexed and gendered life, I describe the role the flight from vulnerability plays in perpetuating a rape culture's perverse pursuit of masculine invulnerability and argue that learning to live our vulnerabilities well is an essential ethical task.
