Regional Ethics Bowl Competition

Sat, 11 Nov 2017 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM

JMU is sending its first team to compete in a regional APPE Ethics Bowl competition hosted by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The 11 regional competitions allow 36 teams to qualify for the Intercollegiate Ethics BowlSM held in March 2018 as part of the APPE Annual Meeting.

According to the APPE website, the IEB "gives students a chance to enter an academic competition that combines excitement and fun with an educationally valuable experience in the areas of practical and professional ethics." In the competitions, "teams argue and defend their moral assessment of some of the most troubling and complex ethical issues facing society today. Questions address a wide array of topics in business and professional ethics, in personal relationships, and in social and political affairs."

JMU's team includes five students from four different majors, including philosophy, psychology, music, and management. Best wishes to these pioneering students and their faculty leader and marketing professor, Dr. Joe Derby, as they represent JMU and use the Eight Key Questions to analyze ethical scenarios and compete with other university teams.
