Cultura y Comunidad Teacher Workshop

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Ice House (127 W. Bruce Street), Room 117

In response to the growing Latino/a community in the nation, state and local community, James Madison University professors have organized the fifth annual Cultura y Comunidad, a community workshop intended to generate ideas about K-12 curricular content on Latin American and Latino/a history and culture in accordance with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

This year’s workshop will focus on Cuba and race in the Caribbean. Workshop participants include: Dr. Kris Juncker, Independent Scholar and Curator; Dr. Stéphane Partel, JMU Visiting Professor; Professor of French, Université des Antilles; Dr. Rei Berroa, Professor of Spanish Literature, George Mason University; and JMU’s Dr. William Van Norman.

The workshop will provide a dialogue about better ways to know our community and make connections between JMU and the local educational communities. We will provide teaching resources to accompany these topics. We hope to build upon existing collaborations between the JMU community and K-12 teachers, staff and administrators in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County in order to better serve our shared student populations.

Please send RSVPs to Kristi McDonnell at mcdonnkc@jmu.edu or (540) 568-7998.
