Mon, 4 Apr 2016 8:00 AM - Fri, 6 May 2016 5:00 PM

JMU CommonHealth invites all faculty & staff to participate in our Spring Walking Challenge – STEP IT UP!  This competition will challenge everyone to get 10,000 steps in each day.

The benefits of walking 10,000 steps:

  • boost your energy
  • aid relaxation and clear your mind
  • provide a sense of achievement and satisfaction
  • improve confidence and mood
  • help manage your weight
  • promote healthier blood cholesterol and blood pressure
  • build stronger bones and muscles
  • reduce your risk of heart attack

GUIDELINES

  • Competition is April 4 – May 6, 2016
  • Employees are encouraged to walk 10,000 steps each day and report totals on the step tracker log
  • Each day that you report walking 10,000 steps, you will be entered into a drawing for an AWESOME grand prize! (TBA)

How do I let CommonHealth know that I want to participate?
You do not need to sign up for this event; submitting your steps will indicate your desire to participate.

Do I have to log 10,000 steps each day in order to participate?
No – however, only the days that you reach the 10,000 steps will give you an entry into the competition.  The more days that you are able to reach 10,000 steps, the higher your chances of winning.
EX:  If you reach this goal each day of the competition, your name will be entered in the drawing 33 times.  If you only reach this goal once during the competition, your name will be entered in the drawing 1 time.

Do weekends count towards this competition?
Yes.

Am I allowed to track steps taken on a treadmill or elliptical for this competition?
Yes – all steps count!

Will CommonHealth provide pedometers?
We will not be providing pedometers; however, several free apps are available for your iPhone or android that will track your steps.  Pedometers are also available at retail stores for less than $5/each.  10,000 steps = approximately 5 miles.

Can I begin participating in the middle of the competition?
Yes – we encourage everyone to participate whenever they can!

Are we competing as teams or individuals?
This is an individual competition.

How will I turn in my steps to CommonHealth?
You may download the step tracker PDF here.  You may submit this form weekly or at the end of the competition.  We will need all submissions by Monday, May 9th.    This form can be submitted by emailing commonhealth@jmu.edu, faxing to 540-568-7916, or intercampus mail – MSC 7009

When will the winner be announced?
May 11, 2016

How will CommonHealth determine the winner?
Each time a participant reaches 10,000 steps, their name will go on a spreadsheet in the order of which their entry is received.  We will use random.org to generate a random number. The corresponding row on the spreadsheet will be the winner.  The more frequently your name is on the spreadsheet (the more often you hit your 10,000 step goal), the better your odds of winning!

Who do I contact if I have additional questions?
Please contact JMU CommonHealth at commonhealth@jmu.edu for any additional questions you may have.
