Refugee Crisis on Lesbos, Greece: A First-Hand Account

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Harrison Hall, Room 2105

As the Syrian conflict intensifies, thousands of refugees are risking their lives to travel by boat from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos. From there they make their way to resettlement cities in Europe where they hope to find stability until their home countries restabilize. This mass migration is creating a crisis as some European countries close their borders to the refugees.

Justin White JMU ‘10, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nevada, spent three weeks in fall 2015 volunteering in Lesbos. In this lecture, he will give a first-hand account of the situation there and address the reasons for the growing crisis.
