September 2   - Dukes in Recovery

Dukes in Recovery is a student-led program that provides a support network for students who are recovering from alcoholism and/or substance addiction.

This support network enables students to come together and discuss how they can support each other through their journey towards sobriety. It provides a non-judgmental, non-critical, and anonymous forum for discussion with JMU students who share the common challenge of staying sober.

Dukes in Recovery is not affiliated with any other addiction treatment programs, and is only for JMU students.

Meetings are weekly, Mondays, 7pm, Montpelier Hall, fifth floor conference room 512c.

The Men's Program is a student organization dedicated to challenging and reframing the concept of masculinity. This all-male group engages in peer education, dialogue, and activism related to healthy masculinity. All men welcome.



September 23 - National Hazing Prevention Week

National Hazing Prevention Week is an opportunity for campuses, schools, communities, organizations and individuals to promote the prevention of hazing. HazingPrevention.Org is the organizer of NHPW and JMU's offices of Fraternity & Sorority Life, Athletics, and Substance Abuse Prevention will be on the Commons Sept. 23-27, distributing information and t-shirts.

Internationally renown speaker Rick Barnes will present "Hazing: When will it end?" Sept. 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall Auditorium.

By bringing attention to the problem of hazing, JMU wants to educate students, coaches, administrators, parents, faculty and staff, athletic and recreational sports directors, band leaders, residence hall leadership, community members, local and campus police, and others to not just recognize hazing, but to learn ways they can prevent it from occurring in the first place.

September 24 - Bisexuality Day

Billie Joe Armstrong, James Dean, Evan Rachel Wood, Frank Ocean. What do these celebs have in common? They are all bisexual.

The LGBT & Ally Education Program invites you to join us 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Sept. 24, on the Commons to celebrate bisexuality for what it really is, beyond the common myths. There will be fun facts and candy! 



September 25 - G.A.M.M.A. meeting

Want to get more involved in the Greek Community? G.A.M.M.A. (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol) is an organization for fraternity and sorority members who are interested in educating their Greek peers about mature management of alcohol. Meetings are every other Wednesday starting September 25th at 8PM in Taylor 402. For more information contact Caitlin Baker, President.



September 26 - Speaker: Rick Barnes

Internationally renown speaker Rick Barnes will present "Hazing: When will it end?"

This keynote takes an honest look at hazing, the problems it causes and the reasons it continues to exist on campus. Participants are challenged to take a serious look at how they work with their newest members. Hazing definitions are covered. Organization principles violated by hazing are highlighted. Necessary changes in moving from historical training of new members to a more contemporary role of new member education is addressed. *1st 100 students will receive free t-shirt.

September 30 - Speaker: Janine Latus

Janine LatusSept. 30 | 7:00 p.m. | Grafton-Stovall Theatre

After the murder of her sister Amy, author and activist Janine Latus was compelled to speak out on behalf of abused people everywhere. A gifted speaker, Janine uses both her sister's story and her own experience with intimate partner violence to weave a powerful story of tragedy, strength, and ultimately survival.

Janine is a dynamic and engaging speaker, coach, and panel moderator on domestic violence, narrative and service journalism and on the business of writing. Her talks and workshops have been sponsored by universities, social service agencies and family violence shelters around the country, for which she's helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars.
