“... a rare mix of grit, soul, and music. She inspires the poet in each of us and gives the heart a place to enjoy the power of words.” —Andrea Davis Pinkney, Vice-president of Scholastic Press

Samantha Thornhill, Furious Flower's poet-in-residence (Jan. 2017)

The Furious Flower Poetry Center presents its January 2017 poet-in-residence, Samantha Thornhill, performing her work downstairs at The Golden Pony.

Vibrant and  earthy, Thornhill’s poetry weaves together myth and memory,  the quotidian and the transcendent, ultimately taking listeners on a journey that ends in both wisdom and delight.

A graduate of University of Virginia’s Masters in Fine Arts program, Thornhill has published her poems in more than a dozen literary journals and anthologies. She is an internationally traveled writer, educator, and curator from Trinidad and Tobago who’s taught poetry to actors at The Juilliard School and creative workshops to the elderly, as well as urban and rural youth. In 2014, Russell Simmons hired her to curate and produce poetry videos for his YouTube vertical, All Def Poetry. She is the founding curator of Poets in Unexpected Places, which was profiled in the New York Times for their dynamic pop-up poetry performances in public spaces.

Open mic follows the reading.
