JMU’s College of Arts & Letters and the Furious Flower Poetry Center present Dr. Bernard Bell, speaking about “The Globalization in China of African American Studies and Culture: From the Spirituals to Hip Hop.”

Bernard W. Bell is a professor of English, american and African American literatures at Pennsylvania State University. he has authored, edited, or co-edited eight monographs and books, ranging from The Folk Roots of Contemporary Afro-American poetry to the prize-winning The Afro-American Novel and Its Tradition. His work on The Contemporary African American Novel: Its Folk Roots and Modern Literary Branches won an American Book Award, the College Language Association Creative Scholarship Award, and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award, among others.

Dr. Bell received his B.A. and M.A. in English from Howard University and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Massachusetts. The recipient of five Fulbright-Hays Lectureship and Senior Specialist Awards, he has lectured internationally at teacher-training schools and universityties in Germany, Portugal, Spain, France, and The People's Republic of China, as well as at the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture in Nigeria.
