Stephanie Nakasian & Veronica Swift will take the stage for an evening of multi-generational vocal jazz delight! Nakasian performed around the world for more than 30 years with husband Hod O’Brien, the veteran be-bop pianist who passed away in late 2016. They also performed as The Family O’Brien with daughter Veronica Swift, who recently won second place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal Competition.

Commissioned by the Forbes Center, this presentation created by award-winning composer and pianist Daniel Kelly celebrates the rich cultural diversity in the Shenandoah Valley by weaving together interviews and stories from family members of Harrisonburg High School students with photography, jazz, classical and folk music. A photographic exhibit will accompany the show.

Lithuanian-born clarinetist Sarunas Jankauskas is a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and contemporary music artist whose playing has been praised for its “exotic flair” and “smooth and seductive delicacy.” Lithuanian-born clarinetist Sarunas Jankauskas is a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and contemporary music artist whose playing has been praised for its “exotic flair” and “smooth and seductive delicacy.” The new professor of clarinet at JMU, Jankauskas will perform an eclectic and exciting program of works by Marquez (Mexico), Chen Yi (China/USA), American composers Muhly and Greene, as well as Frenchmen Ghidoni and Chausson.

One of the brightest stars of the jazz community, Pat Metheny is a 20-time Grammy-winning guitarist whose 42 recordings have sold 20 million records worldwide. Metheny will present a wide range of music from his storied 40-year career with Grammy-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez, bassist Linda Oh and British pianist Gwilym Simcock.

The JMU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Casey Cangelosi and Dr. Michael Overman, consists of nearly 30 students and has performed throughout the East Coast, including concerts at the Virginia Music Educators Association Convention and Virginia Days of Percussion.
