Playing Pictures: Graphic Notation in the 20th Century
Tue, 13 Sep 2016 9:00 AM - Fri, 4 Nov 2016 4:00 PM
INSTITUTE FOR VISUAL STUDIES
In the 1950s, composers including John Cage, Cathy Berberian and George Crumb felt increasingly restricted by both compositional standards and tradition. Inspired by visual sources such as calligraphy and comic books, they created a new American musical genre known as graphic notation. This exhibition offers a range of scores that connect music and the visual arts.
