Transforming Learning through Structured Cultural Immersion: Engaging the University in Global Education.

Wednesday, April 2nd in Taylor Hall 404, Noon

In this scholarly presentation, Dr. Stachowski will draw from decades of experience with Indiana University’s Global Gateway for Teachers, a program that has placed thousands of student teachers overseas, in American Indian communities, and in Chicago city neighborhoods. The Global Gateway is built upon cultural study, community involvement, service learning, and classroom experience. Carefully structured learning requirements are critical if participants are to reap the benefits of cultural immersion by reflecting deeply on what they are experiencing, taking them below the surface of the cultural iceberg to examine assumptions, explore values, and better understand how people think, believe, and live.
