This intensive 1.5 day grant proposal institute is geared for:

  1. those who wish to strengthen their grant writing skills and
  2. beginners who wish to acquire and master the techniques of preparing, writing, and winning proposals from various funding agencies.

The focus will be on how to effectively tell the story that leads to funding, be it for the researcher in the sciences and social sciences, education, humanities, arts, or non-profit professional.  Differentiated instruction for NIH, NSF, and other types of grants (private foundation) will be provided.  Guidance will be offered on how to write graduate assistant support into grants.   Optional individual consultations will also be offered.  Participants will need to bring their own laptops.  In addition, bring a request for proposal (RFP) for a desired grant to the Professional Grant Development Institute.

This Institute is financially co-sponsored by the JMU Center for Faculty Innovation, the Office of Research and Scholarship, and the Graduate School.  

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Understanding the basics of the grant writing process.
  • Catering grant proposals to specific grant agencies.
  • Getting individual grant writing needs met.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these scholarship outcomes:

  • Enhancing scholarly productivity;
  • Forming collaborative scholarly projects with students, faculty, & staff at JMU and other institutions; and
  • Exploring & securing funding opportunities to support scholarly activities
