This CFI Reading Group will explore current or canonical books on teaching, learning, and academic life. Educators from diverse disciplines and backgrounds will come together to read new research and writing higher education, to discuss emerging trends in higher education, and to find innovative and creative ways to apply insights gained from the readings and in-depth conversations. This semester, the focus on diversity and education continues, and the group will read two shorter books Welcoming Blue-Collar Scholars into the Ivory Tower and The Lives of Campus Custodians. Up to 10 participants per group will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Exploring new trends in and larger conversations around higher education
  • Discussing diverse perspectives with colleagues on teaching and learning, higher education, and academic life
  • Reflecting on their own experiences in relation to the insights offered through the readings and conversations
  • Developing concrete strategies for applying the insights gained

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor,
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices,
  • Practicing the integration of scholarship and teaching,
  • Integrating knowledge of student development models in teaching philosophies and practice.
