Disability Rights/Civil Rights on the Line (Flashpoint)

Thu, 29 Mar 2018 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM

Location:  Student Success Center room 4044

No registration necessary.

This Disability Awareness Week Flashpoint raises awareness of Disability Rights and legislative proposals currently being debated. Right now Congress is deciding on legislation that has major implications for disability rights and members of the disability community. HR 620 threatens to roll back key protections provided by the hallmark civil rights legislation for people with disabilities, the Americans with Disabilities Act, passed in 1990. The Disability Integration Act (HR 2472/S910) would offer more community-based options to empower people with disabilities to make decisions and live independently. Congressional action (and inaction) on health care disproportionately affects people with disabilities. This Flashpoint would help raise awareness of the real impact of these and other measures currently being debated, and provide space for participants to learn, think, and talk about issues of disability rights.
