Legacy Career Planning : How Can Senior Faculty Finish Well? Fellowship Application

1/19/18, 2/2/18, 2/16/19, 3/2/18, 3/16/18, 3/30/18, 4/13/18, and 4/27/18 in SSC.

This Madison Career Fellow group will consider the challenges and opportunities for senior faculty as they plan the final stages of their career. The goal is to identify paths toward creating a lasting legacy that serves the mission of the university, while addressing the individual goals, interests, capabilities and challenges that senior faculty face. The group will meet twice per month during the spring semester.  Issues to be addressed, can include such things as

  1. What are the particular challenges that senior faculty face as they age?
  2. What does it look like to leave a “lasting legacy” as a senior faculty member?
  3. What career planning options are available to enable senior faculty to “finish well” and leave the kind of legacy they desire? 

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Developing a plan for their career in order to “finish well” and create their legacy as JMU faculty, and
  • Building a community of senior faculty peers to support their efforts.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these career planning outcomes:

  • Appreciating the place and purpose of comprehensive career planning in academic careers,
  • Creating a comprehensive career plan with a meaningful, measurable goals for professional advancement,
  • Identifying and implementing effective strategies for career advancement, and
  • Identifying strategies to maintain balance in work-life continuum.
