One key to community engagement - that benefits both the community and student learning - is identifying potential partners and developing meaningful relationships with those partners. Non-profits, schools, and government agencies in and around Harrisonburg and Rockingham County have a long history of working with JMU students, providing them learning opportunities to serve the community. Similarly, for over 30 years JMU faculty have sought ways to enhance their teaching and scholarship by partnering with community organizations.

But how are those partnerships built?

This networking opportunity brings together a variety of faculty members and community partners in an informal setting to build awareness of and connection to opportunities for partnering.

We will enjoy a meal and move through quick introductions in order to speedily build a visible network built on the interests of attendees. Participants will have the opportunity to meet fellow participants interested and engaged in such work. Following our lunch, participants are invited to an open house in the Office of Community Service-Learning to learn more and speak with representatives from Community Service Learning, the Office of Outreach and Engagement and the Center for Faculty Innovation.

Participants are invited to attend the both events or to come to either theirs schedule allows for.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Increasing awareness of community needs and opportunities for partnerships, and
  • Networking with faculty, administrators and other JMU staff involved in community engagement scholarship and teaching.

Faculty participants will make progress toward this scholarship outcome:

  • Forming collaborative scholarly projects with students, faculty, & staff at JMU and other institutions.

Facilitator: Jen Almjeld, Ph.D., School of Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication.
