The CFI Books on Higher Education Book Faculty Interest Group (FIG) will focus on reading, discussing, and applying insights gained from current or canonical books on teaching, learning, and academic life. By bringing together faculty from diverse disciplines and backgrounds, the FIG offers opportunities to explore new research and writing on higher education, to discuss emerging trends in higher education, and to find innovative and creative ways to apply insights gained from the readings and in-depth conversations. The group will begin by reading and discussing the book I Love Learning, I Hate School, and make future selections together once the group is convened.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Exploring new trends in and larger conversations around higher education,
  • Discussing diverse perspectives with colleagues on teaching and learning, higher education, and academic life,
  • Reflecting on their own experiences in relation to the insights offered through the readings and conversations, and
  • Developing concrete strategies for applying the insights gained.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor,
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices,
  • Practicing the integration of scholarship and teaching, and
  • Integrating knowledge of student development models in teaching philosophies and practice.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these career planning outcomes:

  • Developing and fostering productive mentoring and networking relationships, and
  • Identifying strategies to maintain balance in work-life continuum.
