Opt to deliver Madison Scholar lecture

Mon, 6 Nov 2017 7:00 AM - 9:00 PM

2017-18 Madison Scholar Susan Opt lecture, “Swimming Outside the Fishbowl: Our Lives as Communicating Creatures” will be delivered at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, in Harrison Hall room 1261, with a reception to follow.
Communication is the essence of who we are and how we relate to one another. In our daily talk, we create and communicate a symbolic reality that shapes us and is shaped by us. Yet, much like fish might fail to “see” the water in which we live out our lives. This lecture presents a rhetorical model that enables us to swim outside our fishbowl reality and “see” the communicative process underlying our ongoing rhetorical interventions to create, maintain, and change our symbolic reality. It also explores how an understanding of this symbolic process can guide our actions as change agents and encourage reflection on the potential futures we are choosing when we communicate.
