DC artist Nicole Salimbene makes the connection between developing an internal emphatic relationship to water with the need to take external actions to change course in how one is living on the planet.

As described in her statement:

"Waiting on its side for collection, I rescued this Mad River Canoe from the trash.  An essay I was reading from Alice Walker's 'We Are The Ones We Have Been Waiting For' heavily influenced the transformation of the canoe.  In the essay she quotes a poem by the Hopi Elders of Oraibi, Arizona, which speaks of the need to understand the practices and intentions that will support each of us during difficult times.  For me it resonated as an emphatic environmental call to action, asking each of us for a more in-depth understanding and synthesis for our internal and external ecology.  And so I came to hope that my salvaged canoe might also ask these questions.  The literal and symbolic idea of water became my guide."
