Keynote Lecture: Fear. Conflict. Trauma: Negotiating Spaces

Fear. Conflict. Trauma. It would seem, in the modern age, that these are in large measure the collective lot of Africa and its diasporas. Yet, in response to these, there has always been the quest for community. This questing is a form of continuous ‘negotiation’ that is fundamental to the calling of those who accept the mantle of Africana Studies.

Maghan KeitaMaghan Keita is Professor of History and the founding Director of both the Institute for Global Interdisciplinary Studies and the Africana Studies Program at Villanova University. Dr. Keita is also the former Director of the University’s Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, and its Graduate Studies in World History. His areas of specialization are African, African American, and World Histories, and Historiography; and, Issues in Class, Race, and Gender. Dr. Keita’s book, Race and the Writing of History: Riddling the Sphinx is the recipient of the 13th Annual Cheikh Anta Diop Award for Best Scholarly Book. Professor Keita’s work on Huck Finn in Context: A Teaching Guide, developed with the Cherry Hill Public Schools and WGBH of Boston, received the 2000 Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Educational Publishing from the Association of Educational Publishers. He is editor of the volume, Conceptualizing/Re-conceptualizing Africa: the Construction of African Historical Identity  (Brill, 2002).  Professor Keita’s most recent work is A Political Economy of Health Care in Senegal (Brill 2007). Dr. Keita is the former Chair of the College Board’s National Academic Advisory Council. He is also the former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the College Board and currently serves the Organization as the Past-Chair of the College Board’s Board of Trustees. He is also on the editorial board of several academic journals, and author of a number of scholarly publications.  Dr. Keita is the former Associate Secretary for Africa for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, and the former Associate Director for Africa for the American Friends Service Committee.
