Young story enthusiasts will develop an understanding of the importance of nature from children’s literature selections. Bring a picnic blanket and picnic lunch for after story time and plan to explore miles of arboretum trails.

Reserve online for Father’s Day Solstice Celebration under the stars. Enjoy fine dining, wines, beer and live music performed by Standing Room Only. Make Father’s Day celebrations wild, wonderful and outdoors when twilight lingers longest at the arboretum.

Andrea Pesce, lecturer of biology at JMU, presents “Warm-Fuzzies, Small Mammals of the Arboretum.” Learn about important small mammals that call the arboretum home and about their natural role in their environment aerating and enriching soil and supporting raptor and small predators as food. Leave understanding that rodents aren’t always pests in the garden.

Physics and Chemistry Building

This exciting new robotics camp for rising fifth through eighth graders is a challenging program designed for middle-school students who want to push robots to the limits. The latest EV3 robot from LEGO will be used. Participants will learn how to use all the sensors as well as advanced building and programming techniques from two JMU physics professors.

The cost is $400, which includes lunches and snacks.

Dr. Oliver Hyman, assistant professor of biology at JMU, presents “It’s a Frog’s Life.” Frogs are among the most interesting kinds of arboretum creatures. Learn how their predatory and dietary habits help keep ecosystems in balance. Because frogs are early indicators of pollution, they are important residents of the arboretum, which supports clean storm water management for area waterways.
