Dr. Maria deValpine, associate professor of nursing at JMU, is a guest on "Extreme Nursing in Bush Alaska." There is an extreme shortage of nurses in "bush" Alaska, where groceries are only delivered in the summer, and alcoholism, sexual assault, diabetes and preventable injury plague the Native Alaskan population in Bristol Bay. deValpine has spent the last three years trying to understand nurses who elect to stay in such a beautiful but harsh environment on the edge of the earth.

Later in the show, Dr. Michael Gubser, associate professor of history at JMU, talks about the importance of history in international development. He says solutions that work in one country often get airlifted to another country that has a very different social and cultural history.
