"R.U.R.," A Studio Theatre Production

Written in 1921 by Czech playwright Karel Capek, this play coined the term "robot" and was one of the first works of science fiction as we know it. In the play, human beings develop the ability to manufacture massive numbers of robots whose purpose is to work as servants to the human race. The robots, seemingly incapable of human thought or feeling but ever self-improving, eventually rebel against humanity. As the human population dwindles due to widespread infertility, the question of whether the robots can emulate their masters in something more than rational thought hangs in the balance.
