John Scherpereel

Scherpereel

John Scherpereel has been a faculty member at James Madison University since 2005 and the director of the EUPS program since 2009. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003), an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998), and a B.A. in Government and International Studies and Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame (1997).

Dr. Scherpereel’s research focuses on the causes and consequences of EU enlargement, the relationship between politics and administration, and the dynamics of territorial governance in the EU and its member-states. His book, Governing the Czech Republic and Slovakia: Between State Socialism and the European Union, was published by FirstForum Press in 2008.  He has also published in West European Politics, the Journal of European IntegrationRegional and Federal StudiesAdministration and Society, and a variety of edited volumes.  Currently, Dr. Scherpereel is working on three projects - one on women's political leadership, a second on experience in the Council of the EU, and a third analyzing the “Turkish question” in EU politics.

In the EUPS program, Dr. Scherpereel has taught the Tutorial in EU Policy Studies (POSC 690) and the EU Seminar (POSC 692). At JMU, Dr. Scherpereel regularly teaches courses on European Union politics, the politics of Central and Eastern Europe, comparative politics, global perspectives on the United States, and food politics.
