What to ask about the medicines you are taking

It is very important that you ask your doctor or pharmacist questions about the medicines you are taking. The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research suggests these:

-- What are the brand and generic names of the medicine?

-- Can I use the generic form?

-- What is the medicine for?

-- What effect should I expect? (In other words, how will you know it's working the way it should.)

-- When do I take this drug?

-- How much do I take?

-- How long do I have to take it?

-- What do I do if I miss a dose?

-- Should I avoid certain foods or activities while I am taking this drug?

-- Do I take this drug in place of one that I am already taking? Or do I take it in addition to what I am taking?

-- When will I start to feel better?

-- Do I need to see you again after taking this drug for a certain amount of time? (to ask your doctor)

-- What are the side effects of this drug?

-- What do I do if a side effect happens?

-- Can I take this drug with the other medicines I am taking? (Be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist about any and all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and/or supplements you are taking.)

-- How do I store this drug?
