My friends who received business degrees often told me that I would have no career prospects as an English major. I am so thankful that I followed my heart. While some of them have worked in the same corporate job since we graduated, I have been able to open more doors to more adventures then I would have thought possible because of the skills I learned as an English major. Thank you to all my teachers who pushed me to be better, especially Dr. Cash!

Building upon the still-vivid Shakespeare lessons from Drs. Favila and Cohen, I have adapted Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" for sixth-grade Advanced English students, and annually direct a live performance featuring my students before a 200+-person audience. They speak in dialogue and use original performance techniques to discover connections between Shakespeare's plays and contemporary life, as well as between Shakespeare's characters and the audiences who watch their stories unfold.

JMU made me the teacher and school-wide literacy advocate that I am today. Teaching high school is scary these days but is worth the terror and trauma. If you ever need any assistance with a career in high school, a career in Maryland, or the National Board Certification process, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Just perusing the site and wanted to drop a line. I have fond memories of learning from the best (Dr. Gilliatt and Dr. Mark Facknitz, of course!).  I often toy with the idea of returning for my MA.  All the best to everyone in the 'Burg!

It is nice to see that Dr. Hoskins is now head of the department!  One of the primary reasons reason I am as successful today is because of his efforts to help me during difficult times.  I always thought the English department had the best and most approachable teachers.  I look forward to reading Dr. Cash's biography on Larry Brown!

Daniel Clare (B.A. 2003)
Washington, D.C.
International Import Agent for Billington Imports, a wine importer based in Washington, D.C.
dclare@billingtonwines.com

Comments: I work in a very diverse multi-national environment: Spanish, Italian, German, and French are spoken throughout the course of a typical business day. As the in-house English Major, I spend a good deal of my time (happily, I might add), as the unofficial English consultant for the company. Methinks I should consider billing them extra for my services!

Mike Tucker (M.A. 1999)
Bangkok, Royal Kingdom
Author; Counter-terrorism specialist
ct6author@hotmail.com

Comments: Greetings and good luck on all your journeys. The Long Patrol, Hell is Over: Voice of the Kurds after Saddam, and Among Warriors in Iraq are all recently published books of mine. Very fortunately, JMU selected me as a Visiting Scholar on counter-terrorism, and I am headed stateside soon to give the Visiting Scholar lecture on October 9, 2006. All the magnificent classes I had in the Graduate Program at JMU have paid off, hundred-fold, in my work as an author and I recommend the m.A. program in English.
