ENG 412: Modern and Contemporary American Women's Poetry

Dr. Holladay 3 credits

This course will provide in-depth study of the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Adrienne Rich, Louise Gluck, and Lucille Clifton. We will also read and analyze works by contemporary poets who live in the region, including JMU's Laurie Kutchins, Rita Dove (U.Va.), Sarah Kennedy (Mary Baldwin College), Nikki Giovanni (Va. Tech), and Dolores Kendrick (Washington, D.C.). Class discussion will focus primarily on analysis of poems, but attention will also be paid to the lives of the poets and the sometimes autobiographical nature of their poetry. Course requirements will include several short essays, an oral report, a 12-page research paper, and a final exam. Students will also attend at least two events during JMU's Furious Flower Poetry Conference, Sept. 24-27, 2014. This page contains more information on this national conference.
