ENG 412: Linguistic Approaches to Literature

Dr. Cote 3 credits

Explore the secret life of words in literature. Examine literary form, meaning, style, and aesthetics from such perspectives as the semantics of metaphor; the functions of syntactic forms; cognitive poetics; discourse models; pragmatics and inference; dialect, gender, or other sociolinguistic issues; humor in language; etc.  Discuss the extent to which perhaps all language use contains so-called "literary" elements.
