Dr. Martin 3 credits
We will spend the first third of this class studying exemplary essays—most of them contained in the shorter thirteenth edition of The Norton Reader: An Anthology of Nonfiction. To encourage close scrutiny, I will give five short-answer quizzes on the assigned readings from this text. I will also give many generative writing exercises in the first third of the class. During the rest of the class, students will distribute essays of their own for workshops in which we will find constructive ways to make their nonfiction more compelling. Students will also write substantial, detail-oriented critiques for all of the essays to be workshopped.
