Dr. Cash 3 credits
Organized both chronologically and thematically, this focused survey concentrates on Southern Literature from its beginnings in the Colonial Period through the contemporary period. Study of this writing will show that the South produced viable work from early in its history, and, in the Twentieth Century, it has, indeed, produced the best writing of any section of the United States. The class consists of the following units: "Art and Intellect in the Old and New South;” "Place and the Natural World in Southern Literature;" “Religion in the Old and the New South;" "The Institution of Family in the Old and New South;" "The Role of Women in the Old and the New South;" and,"Race in the Old and New South." The basic text is the Norton Anthology The Literature of the American South, supplemented by additional works of fiction (novels and short stories), poetry and nonfiction. Students will write four analytical papers, produce a 2,500 word research article, and be actively involved in class discussion and presentation.
