Studies in Poetry (ENG 331, section 1) covers a range of poets and poetic forms spanning several centuries. Although much of the reading will be in modern and contemporary American poetry, we will not limit ourselves to that. Expect an in-depth study of poetic form and meter as well as careful consideration of themes and meaning. You will learn how to scan poetry (i.e., identify the meter), recognize rhyme patterns and poetic forms, and analyze the relationship between form and content.
