ENG 302: African American Drama

Dr. Holladay 3 credits

This course is an advanced survey covering 20th and 21st century plays by African American authors. We will read and analyze plays by mid 20th century authors such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Lorraine Hansberry as well as more recent works by Ed Bullins, Amiri Baraka, August Wilson, Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Anna Deavere Smith. I will occasionally show (or post) video clips of the plays so that we don’t lose sight of the plays as performance.

Reading assignments will include a number of individual plays, plus several critical essays.
