African American Women’s Literature and Theory (ENG 302, section 4) explores the rich and fascinating literature created by African American women from the 18th century to the present. You will read poetry by authors such as Phillis Wheatley, Frances E.W. Harper, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Lucille Clifton, and you will read fiction by Toni Morrison, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Ann Petry, and Octavia Butler. The syllabus also includes a play by Lorraine Hansberry. Readings in Winston Napier’s African American Literary Theory will provide you with new ways of thinking about the literature and its cultural contexts.
