ENG 302: The Art of Fear

Dr. Favila 3 credits

This course will address not only the purpose of this important survival mechanism, but also the pleasure derived from its recreation in art. The class will tackle the topic from several theoretical perspectives, primarily Anna Freud, Bruno Bettelheim, Adam Phillips, Marina Warner, and others. We will look at phobias, the bogey man, the fear of death, and our fascination with the supernatural. Texts will include Poe's short stories/poetry, the films The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the first version of The Haunting, Shakespeare's Macbeth, possibly The Turn of the Screw, and the art works of Goya, Munch, and Bosch. I hope to take the class on a field trip to some haunted corn field around Halloween, and the course will conclude with a trip to the Blackfriars Playhouse to see A Christmas Carol.
