Dr. Cash 3 credits
Through exploring a number of modern and contemporary writers, students in this course will study the depiction of the underclass South from Faulkner and Caldwell through Harry Crews, Dorothy Allison, Larry Brown, William Gay, Silas House, Tim Gautreaux, Tom Franklin, and Ron Rash. Study of this fiction shows that Southern writers continue to produce literature remarkable for its originality and depth of understanding of what life is like for people from the working class South. The course will exercise students' skills in critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking.
