ENG 302: Special Topics in Literature and Language:

The Environmental Imagination

Dr. Bogard 3 credits

In this new creative writing workshop course we will explore the rich tradition of American environmental writing. Through reading widely and writing our own essays we will gain an understanding of the tradition, challenges, and importance of this distinctly American genre.  We will write a number of shorter pieces that focus on the skills of awareness, writing place, significant detail, and more. We will keep a journal, practicing one of the core skills of writing about the natural world. And we will write two main essays—one personal, and one subject-based. Most of our readings will come from American Earth, edited by Bill McKibben. Students from all majors are invited to enroll.
