ENG 299: Writing About Literature

Dr. Rebhorn 3 credits

This course has three main objectives: first, to teach you, and help you become fluent with, the basic elements of literary analysis; second, to introduce you to three important literary genres—poetry, drama, and narrative—and to familiarize you with the aspects and expectations of each genre; lastly, to expose you to major critical modes and theoretical schools in order to enhance your reading and interpretation skills. While we will be working on these parts of the course in isolation, the ultimate goal is to use a collection of poetry, a play and its various staged versions, and several narrative texts to help you become more nuanced, complex, and convincing about your written reactions to a range of texts you’ll encounter as an English major.
