ENG 299: Writing About Literature

          This course serves as the introduction to the tools and vocabulary of literary analysis.  Throughout the semester we will explore poetry, drama, and short and long narrative fiction, learning the critical vocabulary of the field and practicing methods of close reading and analysis.  In addition, we will define the major schools of literary criticism, gaining an understanding of the tools scholars use to interpret literature.  This course is designed to help you make the move from your initial responses to works of literature to thoughtful, engaged, and researched analyses.  Assignments will include short essays, a longer research essay, and writing workshops.
