This course surveys the production of African American literature from the 19th century to the present, tracing the major historical and formal movements including slave narratives, the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and the most recent Post-Soul Movement. Throughout, we will pay special attention to the ways these works were questioned, rejected, recovered, and/or celebrated as contributions to American culture. Genres include memoir, fiction, poetry, drama, and cartoons, with authors including Frederick Douglass, Edward Christopher Williams, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Amiri Baraka, Toni Morrison, Tayari Jones, and Aaron McGruder.
