GENG 248: Survey of American Literature II

Dr. Hefner 3 credits

This literary historical survey addresses both general education students and English majors. In the course not only we will discuss major (and minor) American writers and literary movements since the Civil War, but we will also track some of the major themes in American literature of this period: the idea of a national literature; race and representation in the wake of the Civil War; new immigration and Americanization; industrialization and urbanization; cultural and aesthetic experimentation; the West; the idea of an American “usable past”; American dreams and disillusionment, etc. While no previous experience with American literature or history is required, an interest in these subjects is certainly appreciated!

Requirements will include essay exams, routine quizzes, and other written responses.
