This course introduces students to representative works of South Asian literature produced over the course of the 20th century. It aims to cultivate an awareness of the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts of writings from South Asia and the South Asian diaspora. Texts for the course have been selected from a range of genres, including the novel, short story, drama and poetry. Films will be used to provide a visual complement to the texts. Through close reading and analyses of literary texts, and discussions in class, the course endeavors to refine students' skills of critical thinking, reading and writing.
