GENG 221: Literature/Culture/Ideas.
Caribbean-American Literature and Culture

Lynn Washington 3 credits

In this course, we will approach the study of literature using the lens of cultural studies. For Fall 2013, this course will focus on select works by Caribbean American writers. We will explore the Caribbean-American experience as it manifests in these texts, specifically as it is shaped by identity, nationality, and tradition. We will identify the way that the African oral tradition emerges in these texts through music and vernacular language. Finally, we will analyze and discuss traditional and contemporary constructions of race, class, and gender as they are understood within both Caribbean and American contexts.
