Scholarship Awards for Continuing Students

The Stanley Rhys Say Scholarship, established in Say’s memory in the 1980s provides an annual cash award to a rising junior or senior English major.

The Faculty Prize in English Language and Literature is awarded during the spring semester for use in the subsequent academic year by the faculty in the Department of English to a rising sophomore or rising junior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of the English language and linguistics or of literature written in the English language. This is an annual cash award.

The Joyce and Robert Ledford Scholarship was established by the Ledfords in April, 1993 and provides an average cash award of $680.  Robert Ledford is the president of Ledford Associates, Inc., an interior design and furnishings business.  Their daughter, Angie, graduated from JMU in 1994 with a B.A. in English.

The William J. and Mary G. McMurray Scholarship was established in December, 1995 by Dr. William and Mrs. Mary McMurray.  Dr. McMurray is a retired professor emeritus who taught in the English Department at JMU.  He became head of the department in 1970.  His wife, Mary, received her master’s in reading education from JMU in 1978 and worked in the reading lab here.  The scholarship provides financial aid to an English major studying English and/or American literature full-time, and is awarded by the Financial Aid Office.
